History: Faience may have been developed to simulate highly prized and rare semi-precious blue stones like turquoise. This man-made substance allowed the Egyptians to make a wide variety of objects covered in shiny, bright blue glaze—a color that was closely linked with fertility, life, and the gleaming qualities of the sun.

Egyptian faience is a ceramic material with a siliceous body and a brightly colored glaze. In addition to silica, faience also contains alkaline salts (the source of which was either natron or plant ash), minor amounts of lime, and a metallic colorant.

For centuries, Afghanistan has been an important source for top-quality lapis. Historians believe the link between humans and lapis lazuli stretches back more than 6,500 years. The gem was treasured by the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome.

The scarab beetle was a symbol of immortality, resurrection, and the rising sun. The pendant was often crafted from precious materials such as lapis lazuli or carnelian, and was worn by Cleopatra to symbolize her divinity and connection to the gods.

In many ancient civilizations, cicadas were seen as symbols of immortality and resurrection. They were believed to emerge from the earth after spending years underground, shedding their old exoskeletons and transforming into fully formed adults.

To the Egyptians, these golden beetles were symbols of their sun god rolling the sun across the sky. They also represented resurrection and the soul as they emerged from the ground and flew away. What most people do not know is that the cicada occupied the same role as the sacred beetle to some other ancient people.
