History: Gustave Sherman was one of Canada's finest costume jewellery designers. He began his company in Montreal, Canada, in 1941, producing high end, quality costume jewellery. He used only the best Swarovski stones, crystal beads and findings. He favoured aurora borealis coatings and long marquise cut stones.
In February of 1949, G. Sherman & Company LTD. was founded by Gustave Sherman of Montréal, Québec. The Sherman jewelry company sold both woman's and men's (under the name Senator) jewelry throughout Canada in some of the country's most well-known stores as well as smaller boutiques.
At the time, hematite stone was primarily used as a red powder during the Upper Palaeolithic period and later by homo-sapiens as a pigment for cave paintings. Later, in ancient Egypt, hematite was primarily used to cure blood-related diseases as the stone displays the same colour.
Hematite occurs in a variety of igneous and metamorphic rocks, but is most abundant in sedimentary settings. In sedimentary rocks, hematite can either have formed from have originally formed directly from direct precipitation out of marine waters, or as a concentration and enrichment deposit formed from groundwater.
Hematite holds the meaning of grounding and protection, and its uses range from jewelry and decorative pieces to spiritual practices, where it is believed to enhance stability, balance and shield against negative energies.
