History. Silver was discovered after gold and copper about 4000 bce, when it was used in jewelry and as a medium of exchange. The earliest known workings of significant size were those of the pre-Hittites of Cappadocia in eastern Anatolia.
The term sterling silver denotes any silver alloy in which pure silver makes up at least 92.5 percent of the content. One theory is that the word sterling comes from the name Easterlings—coiners from east German states brought to England during the reign of Henry II (1154–89) to improve the quality of the coinage.
Bangles have a rich history, particularly in India, with evidence of their use dating back to the industrial valley civilization (2600 BC). Early bangles were made from materials like sea shells, copper, bronze, and even gold. The introduction of glass for bangles is believed to have occurred later, around the early centuries AD, with techniques spreading from Roman and Middle Eastern glass industries. By the 16th century, glass bangles had become a popular and affordable adornment in India, especially in regions like Firozabad, which remains a major hub for glass bangle production today.
