Siren's Hymn - Estate Sterling Silver Mermaid Cameo Locket Poison Ring. This lovely ring is crafted from sterling silver, hallmarked STERLING with makers mark. The cameo is also signed by the carver on the back of the actual cameo. Featuring a genuine carved conch shell cameo, Victorian Revival styling, and quality silver work. The cameo is carved from a shell, the background colour is a peach coral colour, whilst the mermaid is white, displaying a lovely shiny patina. The cameo is expertly set in a silver bezel that opens up to a locket, with a secure hook catch so the locket closes up securely and tightly. The shoulders of the ring have a lovely raised floral detail leading down to a polished band. The Victorian Revival ring looks stunning when worn, truly making the piece a unique gift or addition to any jewelry collection.
Note: Originating in ancient India and the Far East, the poison ring eventually ,made its way to Europe. The traditional poison ring has a very small container or locket hidden under the hinged cover. Ancient Romans sometimes used poison rings to commit suicide when a painful death was unavoidable.
In the Italian Renaissance Lucrezia Borgia is thought to have used poison rings to elegantly off her enemies, although it has never been proven. In the Victoria era these charming rings were known as locket rings which would hold a lock of hair from their loved ones or secret messages.
