Star Attraction - Vintage Platinum Star Ruby & Diamond Ballerina Ring.  This gorgeous ring is crafted from platinum, hallmarked PT900.  Featuring one natural  oval cabochon star ruby, 6 natural tapered baguette diamonds, 10 natural round brilliant cut diamonds, Vintage Retro styling , and quality craftsmanship.  The stunning rings 'star attraction' is the beautiful star ruby gemstone, which displays a pinkish/purplish/red hue with a well formed star.  The precious ruby has a diamond surround of round brilliant and baguette diamonds. This design is called a ballerina ring, and this ring is a fine example. The gallery is equally as beautiful, featuring open-worked scrolls and hearts.  The shoulders display an open-worked split design, which are tapered and raised, adding dimension and beauty to the piece. Records suggest that rubies were traded along China's North Silk Road as early as 200 BC. Chinese noblemen adorned their armor with rubies because they believed the gem would grant protection. Burma has been a significant ruby source since at least 600 AD.

Only one in every hundred rough corundum that are mined will have a star-like shape present that is as apparent as the color of the stone. Two in every hundred corundum mined will also have a star, but will either have a poor star shape or a poor stone color. This particular example has a well formed star and a beautiful colour. 

The ancients regarded star ruby gems as a very powerful talisman, a guiding star for travelers and seekers of all kinds. They were so powerful, they were said to continue to protect the wearer even after being passed on to someone else.

This phenomenon is called asterism. The Rosser Reeves Star Ruby is from Sri Lanka, but its early history is not known. When it was purchased by a gem dealer in London in the late 1950s, the ruby weighed 140 carats, but it was subsequently recut to center the star.

The earliest diamonds were found in India in 4th century BC, although the youngest of these deposits were formed 900 million years ago. A majority of these early stones were transported along the network of trade routes that connected India and China, commonly known as the Silk Road.

The rectangular step-cut diamond now called the baguette diamond is believed to have evolved from the hogback, an elongated table cut that was known since at least the mid-16th century. At that time, it was often used to make monograms and jeweled letters (like the owner's initials).

The baguette cut diamond is one of the most popular cuts of diamonds for diamond engagement rings. The word 'baguette,' is one that is of French origin. The word refers to a long, thin loaf of French bread. The Baguette cut of diamond is similar in shape to a baguette in that it is long and rectangular in shape.

The first diamonds cut in the round brilliant cut were seen in the 1700s. ... The round brilliant cut diamond is the most well-known and popular shape of diamond cut.
