Victorian Grand Tour micro mosaic earrings. These gorgeous earrings are crafted from solid brass and glass tile mosaics. Featuring an oval setting with beautiful micro mosaic tiles expertly hand set into an oval brass bezel with a pretty dangle drop at the bottom. The brass lever backs were replaced since a majority of these earrings were made with screw backs for non pierced ears. These brass leavers match up perfectly in colour to the brass on the original earrings. The mosaic tiles display a variation of colours , such as turquoise blue, rose pink, crimson red, sky blue , and white. The tiles are expertly set into the brass bezel into a delicate and beautiful decorative patten of foliage and roses. These earrings are absolutely exquisite and elegant, truly "Grand Tour" treasure to be cherished and enjoyed for many years to come.
Note: The Grand Tour was the traditional trip of Europe undertaken by mainly upper-class European young men of means, or those of more humble origin who could find a sponsor. The custom flourished from about 1660 until the advent of large-scale rail transport in the 1840s, and was associated with a standard itinerary. It served as an educational rite of passage. Though primarily associated with the British nobility and wealthy landed gentry, similar trips were made by wealthy young men of Protestant Northern European nations on Continental Europe, and from the second half of the 18th century, by some South and North Americans. This particular piece would have been purchased in Italy during the early 1900s.
