Victorian micro mosaic Italian brass necklace & earring set. This wonderful set is crafted from brass, and glass tiles. This lovely necklace is known as a fringe design, however this gorgeous piece has an added featured of 3 discs inlayed with tiny micro mosaic glass tiles that form a floral design. The mosaics tiles are black, green, orange white, blue and pink , the back of the discs are hallmarked "Made In Italy". The earrings were most likely originally screw backs for non pierced ears and changed at a lower date to wires for pierced ears. The necklace hangs perfectly when worn on the neck, and artistically a vision of beauty. These necklaces are not often found with matching earrings so finding this treasure was very luck indeed. The necklace features its original clasp which is in perfect working order. The necklace would have most likely been sold as a Grand Tour Souvenir in Italy, making this a piece a Victorian treasure for any unique Jewelry collection.
Note: The Grand Tour was the traditional trip of Europe undertaken by mainly upper-class European young men of means, or those of more humble origin who could find a sponsor. The custom flourished from about 1660 until the advent of large-scale rail transport in the 1840s, and was associated with a standard itinerary. It served as an educational rite of passage. Though primarily associated with the British nobility and wealthy landed gentry, similar trips were made by wealthy young men of Protestant Northern European nations on Continental Europe, and from the second half of the 18th century, by some South and North Americans. This particular piece would have been purchased in Italy during the early 1900s.
