Victorian Perfection - Victorian English 9K Gold Amethyst Pendant/Brooch & 14K Gold Chain. This alluring pendant/brooch is crafted from 9K yellow gold, tested. The chain is crafted from 14K yellow gold, hallmarked 585 (European hallmark for 14K) and Italy. The pendant features 4 natural oval cut faceted amethysts, 4 natural pear shaped faceted amethysts, 5 natural round cut faceted amethysts, Victorian era styling, and high quality craftsmanship. Four petals and Four oval cut natural amethysts radiate outward from the central crucifix form. Each is evenly matched in royal purple coloration and their scintillating highlights. The settings are closed, forming delicate claws, which hold the amethysts securely in the bezels. The vibrant gems are open-backed, which allows the light to shine through the beautiful purple gemstones, which display a purplish/violet hue. The pendant can also be worn as a brooch, since the bale folds over and is hidden when it is desired. The pin locks into place in the original 'C' clasp lock. The chain is a classic curb chain, which has segments of three larger hoops, which adds character and decoration to the piece. These type of pendants are becoming more scarce and highly collectable. Such a stunning piece of antique jewelry!

History: Ancient Greeks and Romans believed this gemstone could ward off the intoxicating powers of Bacchus and keep the wearer clear-headed and quick-witted. English regalia were decorated with amethysts during the Middle Ages to symbolize royalty. Amethyst jewelry has been found and dated as early as 2000 BC.
Gold has been known since prehistoric times and was one of the first metals to be worked, mainly because it was to be found as nuggets or as particles in the beds of streams. Such was the demand that by 2000 BC the Egyptians began mining gold.
