History: Cameo jewelry is a type of jewelry that features a relief carving of a person, animal, or scene. The carving is usually made out of a material such as agate, onyx, or shell. Cameo jewelry has been around since ancient times, and the popularity of cameos has ebbed and flowed over the centuries. Cameo jewelry can also be made from glass or resin, which is poured into a mold to make the relief look like it has been carved.
The first known gold plating occurred in northern Peru, where Pre-Columbian smiths gilded and silvered copper pieces by electrochemical replacement techniques. During excavations in the late 1980s, archaeologists discovered gold and silver ornamental and ceremonial artifacts dating all the way back to AD 50-300.
