The history of simulated turquoise is rooted in the high demand and increasing prices of genuine turquoise, leading to the creation of imitations and enhancements to meet market needs. These include dyed howlite, plastic, resin, and reconstituted turquoise, which are often used to mimic the look of natural turquoise.
As early as 3100 BC, Egyptians used dyed soapstone as a substitute for turquoise, possibly due to supply issues or the need for less expensive materials.
Gold plating, a technique of applying a thin layer of gold to a base metal, has a history in ancient civilizations and evolved through the 19th century with the invention of electroplating by Luigi Brugnatelli.
