On This Day In 1898 - Victorian 18K Rose Gold Diamond & Pearl Enamel Cluster Ring. This very special ring is crafted from 18K rose gold, hallmarked 18 (British Hallmark for 18K) , Birmingham, a letter date for 1875-76, with an inscription , which reads Mina (ladies name) 21st Feb/98. Featuring 6 natural pearls, one natural Old Cut diamond, exquisite enamel work and detailing, and quality gold-work. The expertly set pearls display a beautiful silvery grey colour, with a wonderful lustre. The diamond displays a beautiful gentle glow (a characteristic of Old Cut diamonds) as appose to modern diamonds, which exhibit more of a blinding sparkle. The gallery features beautiful cobalt blue enamel work with split tapered open-work shoulders, leading down to a smooth and polished shank, which allows for a comfortable fit. The highly collectible Victorian era ring, is truly a piece to be cherished and enjoyed for many years to come.
Note: Antique rings with full hallmarks and inscriptions are more valuable to collectors. This ring is highly desirable because it checks all the boxes. This is a wonderful example of a ring full of intrigue and questions. It was crafted a couple of decades earlier than the inscription. So I love the mystery behind, the piece. Was it kept in a vault and sold at a later date? Did someone purchase it and kept it until someone became of age? Was it purchased when it was made, sold, and then purchased again. Was it an engagement or wedding ring? Was it a mourning ring ? Our imagination and questions are limitless. A very special intriguing ring indeed.
Comments: !n 1953, GIA formally created its diamond grading system, known as the 4 C's. The 4 Cs of diamond quality are the universally recognized diamond grading system still to be used today. 1n 1955, GIA presented its first diamond grading reports, which became the hallmark of grading reports in the diamond industry. Before this time in antiquity clients did not care about diamond grading. It was based more so on the size of the diamonds ( according to budget) , style, and sentiment. This ring is a wonderful example of the Victorian era, just beautiful!
