Note:  Contemporary appraisals do not reflect the value of antique jewelry. Value is based on rarity and desirability. So although gemstones and metal are taken in to consideration when evaluating an antique piece of jewelry, it is considered to be more-so object driven.

Garnet is said to inspire contemplation and truthfulness, and offers its wearer the power to protect their standing and possessions. The garnet is also an ancient symbol of friendship. In the past, garnets have been exchanged between parting friends to symbolize their affection and to endure that they meet again.

Physical healing properties of garnet are believed to detoxify and purify. Garnet gemstones are thought to assist with regeneration, as supported by garnet meaning and revitalization. Garnet is believed to increase the metabolism and libido. It is thought to detoxify the blood as well as the heart and lungs.

Garnets are a group of silicate minerals that have been used since the Bronze Age as gemstones and abrasives. All species of garnets possess similar physical properties and crystal forms, but differ in chemical composition. This garnet was most likely mined in Sri Lanka (Ceylon).

Almandine occurs rather abundantly in the gem-gravels of Sri Lanka, whence it has sometimes been called Ceylon-ruby. When the color inclines to a violet tint, the stone is often called Syriam garnet, a name said to be taken from Syriam, an ancient town of Pegu (now part of Myanmar).

Most almandine garnets are opaque, so gem-quality transparent specimens are considered rare. This type of garnet can range from purplish red to dark red. Almandine is also found in the form of star garnets. Red garnets are found all over the world, with deposits on every continent.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                The earliest diamonds were found in India in 4th century BC, although the youngest of these deposits were formed 900 million years ago. A majority of these early stones were transported along the network of trade routes that connected India and China, commonly known as the Silk Road.

In History of the United Kingdom, the Victorian era was the period of Queen Victoria's reign, from the 20th of June 1837 until her death on the 22nd of January 1901.
