History: Its name comes from the ancient Greek word for green, “smaragdus.” Rome's Pliny the Elder described emerald in his Natural History, published in the first century AD: “… nothing greens greener” was his verdict. ... The first known emerald mines were in Egypt, dating from at least 330 BC into the 1700s.

Most of Colombia's emerald deposits are located on the eastern ridge of the Andes Mountains that run northeast-southwest through the country. The three main mining areas are Chivor, located in the eastern part of Boyacá Department, and Muzo and Coscuez in the western part of the province.

The first known emeralds were mined in Egypt around 1500 BC. One of Cleopatra's favorite stones was emerald, and her passion for the stone was well documented. Emeralds were discovered in South America in the 16th century by the Spanish. They were used by the Incas well before this discovery.

Cleopatra had two favourite gemstones. Emeralds and Lapis Lazuli. This is known through documentation.
