Deep Sky - Vintage Platinum Natural Sapphire & Diamond Necklace. This classic necklace is crafted from platinum, hallmarked PT900. Featuring a natural oval cut faceted sapphire, 8 natural round brilliant diamonds, classic styling, and high quality craftsmanship. The gallery on this pendant is set with a beautiful indigo blue sapphire, which displays a violet/blue hue. The sapphire is expertly claw-set, and has a sparkling diamond surround. The chain portion of the necklace is a classic belcher design, featuring a secure spring ring clasp, in perfect working order. The chain is also crafted from platinum and is meant to be worn at collar length, so the beautiful cluster of gems sits slightly above the collar bone. History: The celestial blue color of this gemstone symbolized heaven and attracted divine favor and wise judgment. Greeks wore sapphire for guidance when seeking answers from the oracle. Buddhists believed that it brought spiritual enlightenment, and Hindus used it during worship.
The earliest diamonds were found in India in 4th century BC, although the youngest of these deposits were formed 900 million years ago. A majority of these early stones were transported along the network of trade routes that connected India and China, commonly known as the Silk Road.
The metal was used by pre-Columbian Indians but platinum was "rediscovered" in South America by Ulloa in 1735 and by Wood in 1741.
