History: Joseph Strasser could be credited with the precursor to our present day Rhinestone, but it was really when Georg Freidrich Strass in 1760 invented the first ever rhinestone (artificial gemstone) from a special type of crystal found in the Rhine River that the stones we know today were born.
Eye-catching, dangling pieces set with suspended stones, chandelier earrings originated from the Middle East, India, and Greece. ... In 1947, King George IV gifted a pair of diamond chandelier earrings to his daughter, now Queen Elizabeth II, as a wedding gift.
After the age of British colonialism, chandelier earrings became popular in the West. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Western-made jewelry used gemstones imported from the East, so Eastern earring styles like chandeliers became the trend.
