Walk Like An Egyptian - Vintage Ancient Revival 14K Gold Carnelian, Onyx & Chrysoprase Scarab Ring. This fabulous ring is crafted from 14K yellow gold, hallmarked 14K, and a makers mark SJ.  Featuring one genuine oval shaped carved carnelian, one oval shaped carved onyx, one oval shaped carved chrysoprase, Ancient Egyptian Revival stying, and quality craftsmanship. This unique ring is expertly bezel set with 3 beautiful carved scarabs. The scarabs are carved from 3 different types of chalcedony, an orangy/red carnelian, a jet black onyx, and a forest green chrysoprase. The variation of colors from the chalcedony gemstones makes the ring all the more beautiful and interesting. In-between each of the scarabs there is raised bobble type detailing (a characteristic found in ancient and antique jewelry), which adorns the open-worked ring. The band is also open-worked, exposing the finger, which adds an airiness to the piece. Whilst the back of the ring has a solid back where the bands are joined, which allows for easy sizing. This Vintage ring is unique and full of character, truly a wonderful piece for your collection.

History: Egyptian Revival jewelry came into its golden age in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The completion of the Suez Canal in 1869 connected the Mediterranean and Red Seas and propelled opportunities for travel and an interest in Egyptian culture.

The Egyptians saw the Egyptian scarab (Scarabaeus sacer) as a symbol of renewal and rebirth.

Scarabs are a mesmerizingly diverse family of beetle found in every part of the world except in the oceans and on Antarctica. There are about 30,000 scarab species comprising about 10 percent of all known beetles.

Carnelian belongs to the mineral family quartz. Its history dates back 4,500 years, at which time Ancient Sumerians and Ancient Egyptians fashioned it into body ornaments. The Ancient Greeks and Romans also favored the semi-precious gemstone for intaglios which they used in signet rings.

HISTORY. Onyx, a member of the chalcedony family, takes its name from the Greek word “onux,” meaning “fingernail.”According to Roman mythology, Cupid clipped the fingernails of the goddess Venus while she slept. To immortalize every part of her body, the fates transformed the clippings to stone.

Chrysoprase was used by the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians to make seals, signets, jewelry and other ornamental objects because of its vivid color. The modern word comes from the literal Greek translation chrusos , meaning golden, and prason , meaning leek, indicating the golden-leek green color of the stone.

Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.
