Wearable Art - Vintage Sterling Silver Natural Ruby & Emerald Artisan Ring. This ring is crafted from sterling silver, hallmarked 925 for sterling silver. The ring features one natural oval cut ruby, two natural pear shape emeralds, vintage styling, and quality craftsmanship. The gallery on this ring is expertly bezel set with a red ruby, and two green emeralds. The gemstones are flanked by a raised decoration, which gives the ring dimension, and character. The ring showcases artisan work from Asia, and has a wonderful tribal feel. The shank is smooth, and solid , which allows for a comfortable fit, and easy sizing. Note: The gemstones are natural so there is a difference in the colour of the two emeralds. This gives the ring character, and a more natural feel. 

History: Rubies have been particularly prized in Asian countries. Records suggest that rubies were traded along China's North Silk Road as early as 200 BC. Chinese noblemen adorned their armor with rubies because they believed the gem would grant protection. Burma has been a significant ruby source since at least 600 AD.

Emerald gemstones were mined in Egypt as early as 330 BC, but some estimate that the oldest emeralds are 2.97 billion years old. Cleopatra is perhaps the most famous historical figure to cherish emerald gemstones.

Silver Mining in History. The story of silver mining began about 5,000 years ago. Silver was first mined around 3,000 BCE in Anatolia, now located in modern-day Turkey. The precious metal helped early civilizations in the Near East, Ancient Greece to flourish.

The term sterling silver denotes any silver alloy in which pure silver makes up at least 92.5 percent of the content. One theory is that the word sterling comes from the name Easterlings—coiners from east German states brought to England during the reign of Henry II (1154–89) to improve the quality of the coinage.
