Whiter Than White - Vintage Silver Plate Faux Pearl Strand Necklace. This pretty necklace is crafted from silver plate over metal. Featuring numerous pearls (simulated), and vintage classic styling. This lovely necklace is hand strung with beautiful white colored pearls, displaying white/silvery overtones. The pearls are hand - knotted with white silk thread, which protects each pearl from rubbing against each other. The necklace has a secure lobster-claw clasp, which looks to be a replacement. The original clasp may have worn out so a lobster-claw clasp was most likely was put on at some point for easy access and security. The pearls are of very good quality, and display a beautiful lustre and weight, as genuine pearls do. This vintage necklace would make a perfect wedding or special occasion necklace. 

History: Two forms of faux pearls were manufactured in Italy, the earliest, produced from at least the 13th century, and hailing from the ingenious glass workshops of Venice, were imitation glass pearls. Some of these pearls were apparently made from an intriguing mixture of powdered glass, and egg  white. Faux pearls(simulated pearls)are made up of glass, ceramic, shell or plastic to give them the appearance of real pearls. This faux pearl is often painted and covered in a material that simulates a pearl-like luster and false iridescence. Faux or simulated pearls are man made. 

Centuries ago, quartz pebbles with a high lead content were found sparkling on the banks of Europe's Rhine River. These beautiful, natural stones were highly coveted and were eventually depleted, inspiring jewelers to create an imitation, aptly named the "rhinestone."
