Pastel Wreathe - Vintage Rhodium Plated Austrian Aurora Borealis Crystal Rhinestone Floral Wreathe Brooch. This lovely brooch is crafted from rhodium plate, over metal. The brooch features numerous round cut crystal rhinestones, vintage styling, and quality craftsmanship. This vintage brooch is comprised of a beautiful flower surround in an array of sparkling pastel crystals, which are interspaced by ribbons of silver. The back of the brooch features a pin and rotary locking mechanism in perfect working order. This pretty vintage brooch would make a beautiful accessory on any of your favourite clothing attire. 

History: Origins. Originally, rhinestones were rock crystals gathered from the river Rhine, hence the name, although some were also found in areas like the Alps (the source of the Rhine). Today the name "rhinestone" applies only to varieties of lead glass known as crystal glass.

Initially, the primary application of rhodium involved its use as a catalyst rather than in jewellery plating. It was only in the 1930s that the concept of rhodium plating emerged, paving the way for its integration into the jewellery industry by the 1950s.

AB is the abbreviation for this special finish which was applied to rhinestones and beads in the early 1950's to make them appear more radiant. The finish was given the name Aurora Borealis, taken from the phenomena sometimes seen in the skies of Northern countries known as the Northern Lights.
