The Norse tree of life is a large ash tree named Yggdrasil the world tree, which connects the Nine Worlds and is the center of the cosmos. Yggdrasil is also the tree where it's said that Odin sacrificed himself … to himself. Yggdrasil represents the cycle of life, death and rebirth.
Trees have profound roles in worlds both real and fictional. With their majestic bark, lush laid-out branches and billowing cloud of leaves, humans are drawn to them in deep fascination.
Yggdrasil, the World Tree in Viking mythology, grew on an island surrounded by the ocean, in the depths of which the World Serpent lay. This ash tree's trunk reached up to the heavens, and its boughs spread out over all the countries of the Earth. Its roots reached down into the Underworld.
The Viking Age was the period during the Middle Ages when Norsemen known as Vikings undertook large-scale raiding, colonizing, conquest, and trading throughout Europe, and reached North America. It followed the Migration Period and the Germanic Iron Age from 793 AD to when the Normans invaded England in 1066.
