History: The history of garnet dates back to the Bronze Age, more than 5000 years ago. Its name, which has been used since these ancient times, was derived from the Latin word granatium, which means pomegranate (because the small, red crystals were thought to resemble pomegranate seeds.
The name hessonite comes from the ancient Greek word esson, meaning inferior, because of the stone's low density and hardness, compared to other kinds of garnet. Hessonite has been prized for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks and Romans used the stone in jewelry, and for cameo and intaglio pieces.
Gold was generally used for a couple thousand years solely to create things such as jewelry and idols for worship. This was until around 1500 BC when the ancient empire of Egypt, which benefited greatly from its gold-bearing region, Nubia, made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.
At the time, King Louis XV of France hired a jeweler to create a diamond shape that looked like the lips of his mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour. Insisting that hers were the most perfect lips he had ever seen, Louis XV wanted a diamond shape that reminded him of them.
