First Bloom - Vintage Signed J.J. Jonette' Silver & Gold Plated Pearl Brooch. This exquisite brooch is crafted from a silver and gold plated metal. The brooch features one faux pearl, and vintage styling. This lovely brooch is made in the form of a floral motif, which is adorned by a champagne colored lustrous pearl. The brooch has a silver matt finish, and a contrasting high polish gold finish. There is a pin on the back and a secure rotary lock. This lovely brooch is vintage, however it does have an elegant modernistic feel. Truly a wonderful addition to any vintage jewelry collection.

History: Jonette Jewelry Company, or JJ, was a Providence, Rhode Island company in business from 1935 through 2006. The name of the company wasn't always the same. Originally, the company, started by Abraham Lisker, was called The Providence Jewelry Company. Over the years, the company's name was changed to Lisker & Lisker and after a significant slow-down in production during the years of World War II, the company revamped and resurfaced as Jonette Jewelry.

JJ is known for it's novelty jewelry, including figurals and animal designs and its Christmas themed jewelry. In the 1980's, JJ produced two specialty lines: Artifacts, a line of novelty pins, and Santa Fe, a line of American western jewelry.

Two forms of faux pearls were manufactured in Italy, the earliest, produced from at least the 13th century, and hailing from the ingenious glass workshops of Venice, were imitation glass pearls. Some of these pearls were apparently made from an intriguing mixture of powdered glass, snail slime and egg white.

Faux (imitation pearls) are man-made beads. They're often made from glass, plastic, alabaster or shells that have a pearly coating to give a similar appearance to real pearls.

Brooches developed from the Roman clasp, or fibula, similar to a safety pin, in regions that had been part of the Roman Empire. In the severe climate of northern Europe, the brooch became the characteristic ornament because it routinely functioned as a fastening for a heavy cloak or tunic.
