History: Originally, rhinestones were rock crystals gathered from the river Rhine, hence the name, although some were also found in areas like the Alps (the source of the Rhine). Today the name "rhinestone" applies only to varieties of lead glass known as crystal glass.
Two forms of faux pearls were manufactured in Italy, the earliest, produced from at least the 13th century, and hailing from the ingenious glass workshops of Venice, were imitation glass pearls. Some of these pearls were apparently made from an intriguing mixture of powdered glass, snail slime and egg white.
Porcelain jewelry's history began in ancient China, where its beauty and durability led to its use in ornaments, eventually spreading to Europe via trade routes. In Europe, it became popular during the Renaissance and reached new heights in the 18th and 19th centuries as a symbol of sophistication. The development of European porcelain manufacturing in the 18th century, following the discovery of its secrets in China, led to the production of intricate pieces, including hand-painted jewelry and cameos, favored by royalty. The 20th century saw modern artists continue the tradition, blending traditional forms with contemporary designs, creating a rich, enduring legacy for this fine ceramic material in jewelry making.
The technology behind gold plated jewelry is credited to Italian chemist Luigi Brugnatelli. In 1805, he discovered the process for electroplating. It was quickly adopted for jewelry styles, with many Victorian jewelry pieces using gold plating.
